Automotive Plastic Repair Services

Automotive Plastic Repair Services
By Lance Winslow

Plastic Repair? What are the top considerations in plastic repair, we hear an awful lot about this in the detailing industry, especially in the last ten years. But really plastic is been used in automobiles since the 1930s when Henry Ford for started putting it in his automobiles Ford had built a deck lid made of plastic for one of his cars and actually jumped up and down on it to demonstrate its strength and quality into the world Expo he actually took a sledgehammer to it. Henry Ford Sr. always had a knack for drawing the crowd. Still, the public was really not convinced, because plastic at that time was For toy cars, not real ones. Henry Ford of course to get on is a challenge to convince the public that plastic was the way to go.

By the 1940s the public had caught on. It wasn't so after Henry Ford died that the Next Generation of cars started using plastic. This is similar to the airline industry and composite material. In Ohio there is a huge research center which studies, researches and Tests composites. The military uses composites and their aircraft. In the 777 had nearly 12 percent made out of composites, this Next Generation of aircraft by Boeing the 7E7 will be made of nearly 50 percent composite. After Ford died Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford in many foreign automakers would have plenty of plastic in their cars.

Even Goodyear started making plastic for automobiles and those days, which supplemented the rubber industry after World War II. If you ever get chance in you ever get to Akron Ohio, may I recommend going to the world of rubber museum at the Goodyear plant downtown. There is so much rubber in today's automobile, along with so much plastic that is actually causing a real problem when these cars are crushed for metal recycling or end up in the junkyard. As a matter-of-fact the problem is so huge in Europe, that the EU, WTO and other organizations have formed the ELV End of Life Program to fix this problem.

http://www.parthe.net/cwg0503/0000006f.htm

http://www.parthe.net/cwg0503/00000070.htm

The University of Chicago has been working on ways to meld down the plastic and the foams to reuse. I would say within the next decade we will have a similar program to the ELV program in Europe. Today if you look at the South every person living in a mobile home has a least five cars not running sitting out front rusting away. These are iron oxides get into the groundwater and can cause increased chance of heart attacks. When these vehicles catch fire the smoke from the plastic is quite toxic.

These days when you detail a car you have no idea what the surface underneath that pain is made out of. It could be aluminum, steel, stainless-steel, composite, polypropylene, polyethylene or anyone of a number of plastics, mostly made from petroleum byproducts. Yes, that's right oil. What's good for Texas is good for America. What's good for General Motors is good for America. What's good enough for your car is good enough for us to detail or restore. This is why we've decided in some markets that plastic repair is an excellent add-on service for our wholesale detailing clients and perhaps in some instances good for our retail detail clients.

There has been much talk in the trade publications on the subject of plastic repair, while I concur with most of what ever read, I along with many operators are quite skeptical as to the time and quality and skill required to repair plastic correctly. In mobile Tech News and on the Web sit MobileWorks several vendors who sell plastic repair kit's of all types. Some for the interiors of cars, some for the plastic lenses of taillights and others for rubber repair, and it appears that there is quite in art in a science to doing the job right. I cannot recommend to a novice detailer to jump right in and start offering plastic repair to their customers. On Auto auction vehicles, used car lots, wholesale detailing customers and on new car lots for used car trade-ins, this appears to be an excellent way to bundle services and at a little bit to the wholesale detailing price. In states like Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, Nevada, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and you know I'm starting to feel like that Dean character, where the wholesale detailing price floats between $55 and $70 there needs to be away to get the price up. If there are holes or problems with a plastic inside the vehicle adding another $35-$50 might just be the ticket, because now you got your price closer to $100.00, which is really were you want to anyway.

Where bumpers used to be steel with sheet steel metal wrap now there is plastic. Plastic bumpers with Rubber and composite seem to trump alloys. I have seen plastic parts inside of transmissions operating as the overdrive gear, plastic parts inside of break components, engines, radiators, fuel tanks, as structural parts of the frame, as fasteners as well as just about every part of the automobile. The funniest part about this whole thing is there is a kid from MIT who is actually planning a composite/plastic building and in Japan there doing experiments in plastic bridge construction, saying that it will weather better than concrete and Rebar.

With less contraction and expansion, let's face it plastic and composites are here to stay. They are stronger they weigh less an air just simply smarter materials to use especially when you're shooting for higher numbers in your MPG goals. We also saw a recently that the steely import tax raised the price of an SUV $800, prompting automakers to use even more plastics and more composites to save money and weight, not so good for the steel manufacturing which it one time was the backbone of this economy, but certainly good news for lightweight materials and fuel consumption. But is strong test plastic in his it is still easily damaged just like sheet steel metal. Of course the new Saturn commercials show a man kicking a door and it just pops back out again. But not everything pops back out again. Plastic repair kits are used in the auto body shop business more than the detailing business, but this is also changing as more and more detailers become aware of plastic repair.

The idea of plastic repair is worthy of the body shop in the consumer because it lowers the overall cost of repairs, which means the cash customer coming into a body shop can save money and the insured customer will net the body shop more money since it costs less to repair the to replace. Also there could be significant time-savings in that to replace the part may not be possible because the part is not in stock at the dealership. In needs to come from the distribution center. I cannot tell you have many times the distribution center has been out of the , and he which you need. And there for your car sits there, not been worked on, taking up space, at risk of more damage in the parking lot or being broke into by Pablo Gonzalez & Co. midnight auto supply or Joe Meth need a stereo to sell to the fence tonight good citizen. And before you tell me I'm stereotyping, BS, because both of those scenarios have happened to me personally.

The technicians are also happier because they can make more money servicing the part if they're working on commission of the body shop. Many body shops are commission based. Another person makes quite happy is the garbage and man, because you are not over filling dumpsters with unneeded waste as we talked about before. The only difficult thing that with plastic repair is better requires lots of training. Luckily there it is an inter industry conference called I-CAR Collision Auto Repair which has seminars and vendors have stepped up to the plate who sell the products used to train how to use them. General Motors also offers courses in repairing plastics. Some of these in-depth technical information seminars and hands-on repair skills practice sessions in interior and exterior plastics and sheet molded compounds are very good. After having sit in on a couple I was amazed at how easy this stuff is and how easy it is to do it incorrectly. What I found most interesting was that you really have to look at the part and determine is this part were fixing or should I just shit can it and get a new one.

This is a very logical decision, it takes time to get a part in, it costs money to buy the part, it takes time to repair it, it takes labor away from another job, there's a space consideration in your shop for the number of cars there, there is a customer consideration in of course the plastic kits are relatively cheap, but they aint free. Sometimes you look a part and say well that would be hard to fix, is my technician qualified, will it come out right, is it worth the risk to try, or should I just order another part and put this individual on other car. One thing I found out in the seminars, is to never played the guessing game, instead follow the directions exactly.

The most important thing in plastic repair is to thoroughly clean the surface and remove the petroleum substances on the surface of the part. The best way to do this is to remove the mold release agent is to use simple hot water and soap. Then you use the chemical cleaner that came with the kit and immediately begin your repair. The longer the part sets, the more chance that the mold release is still left in the plastic and that will rise to the surface and deteriorate the adhesion. The modern automobile has over 100 different types of plastic in its overall product. Wonderfully u say? So the first and most important thing to do is to identify what type of plastic this is. Not every type of plastic has a repair kit, said don't just think you can fix anything because you can't, well you can try, but it might turn out like crap. The choices of repair kit's generally correspond to the degree of flexibility of the part been repair. Classified in three categories; rigid, semi-rigid, flexible.

Most automotive plastics belonged to, two different families; thermo-plastic and thermosetting. Thermoset repairs require the use of adhesion promoter or cleaner between each repair step, but for thermo-plastics you use is strong chemical cleaner, and if you do it the wrong step or stage of the repairs your repair will be an absolute failure. Although I will not go into the steps to repair all plastics but like to talk about a couple different methods. The methods include chemical repair, welded repairs and re-texturing and refinishing. If all the cells too complicated you can always remove and replace, the American plastics council APC; maintains a database of recycling centers.

http://www.APC.org

Before anyone tells you that plastic repair is a way to go in your mobile detailing business for automotive detail shop you may wanna start small, for instance try out when those cool kits to fix tail lights or go down to Home Depot and by a plastic repair kit and play around with it for awhile and ask yourself do you have the patients and will you follow instructions because I have seen some really blotched refinishes and some really botched chemical repairs. Occasionally you might be detailing a car any save yourself what happened here, why is this discolored, why is it rough here and smooth there, will I can tell you because in a practice session I went to just about everyone there are botched a couple, it takes a little practice and takes little time, do not expect to learn how to be an expert plastic repair technician overnight, it just won't happen.

If you are a stickler for details and if you can follow instructions maybe you should look into the new and profitable world of thermo-plastic repair.

Phoenix Auto Glass Repair Shop Celebrates 'Car Care Month' to Keep Drivers Safe

Phoenix Auto Glass Repair Shop Celebrates 'Car Care Month' to Keep Drivers Safe
By Bill Burke

It can be intimidating enough driving on the roads and freeways without having to worry about breaking down in the middle of traffic or in an unsafe environment! Even though you think you have the most reliable car on the road, it doesnt take much neglect to go from safe to sorry!

Regular car maintenance is essential not only to your car, but to your loved ones as well. More than five percent of vehicle accidents result from unperformed vehicle maintenance; resulting in 2,600 deaths, 100,000 disabling injuries and a cost of more than $2 billion every year according to the Car Care Council.

A recent survey by the Car Care Council found:

  • 38% of cars had low or dirty engine oil
  • 28% had inadequate cooling protection
  • 54% had low tire pressure
  • 19% needed new belts
  • 16% had dirty air filters
Leased cars are probably the easiest to maintain as they actually include indicator lights on the dashboard that tells you when its time for maintenance. Any new car purchased from a dealership includes the warranty and maintenance schedule; however, the dealership, and your local mechanic, will also send out reminders. For those used cars that might not come with a maintenance schedule, there are websites such as www.Edmunds.com which provide the appropriate information for just about every make and model vehicle. Critical components that are checked at every service interval include automatic transmission fluid, battery and cables, belts, engine air and oil filter, exhaust, fuel filter, hoses, power steering fluid and tire inflation and condition. These should be checked according to the following schedule:

  • Every three months or 3,000 miles
  • Every six months or 6,000 miles
  • Every 9 months or 9,000 miles
  • Every 12 months or 12,000 miles
In addition to the above, your car should be checked monthly for lights, tire inflation, check engine light on and windshield washer fluid. October is designated as Fall Car Care Month by the Car Care Council! This means that volunteer car technicians all across the country will help consumers prepare for the upcoming winter season and educate about proper car care safety. Subaru has announced their support of Fall Car Care Month. Owners of Subarus can bring their cars into local dealerships for free inspections with particular focus on areas that minimize fuel consumption.

Repair Mercruiser Parts

Repair Mercruiser Parts
By Trish Dougherty

Mercruiser

Mercruiser is the leading producer of gasoline-powered stern drivers and inboards. The company has been active in this industry for the past forty years. They have a stellar reputation as being reliable and a customer driven company. Mercruisers are sold both domestically and internationally, and offer customers warranties, and technical support.

What is an inboard motor?

An inboard motor is a car engine. It is a fixed propulsion system; an individual is driving a drive system that works via a gearbox with external features. An outboard engine is one that is directly connected to the drive system.

Mercruiser Inboards

Mercruiser is the major player in the gas engine business. Mercruiser inboards are popular because of their ease of use and ease to maintain. These inboards offer a range of power and are used both in cars and boats. A mercruiser engine works the same way a car engine does. The inboard engine is a water-cooled, separate lubrication system, and cylinder formation.

Repair Mercruiser Parts

Mercruiser engines for the most part are very reliable, but when it comes to car engines, or other parts for that matter, something can and will usually go wrong. Things eventually break down and stop working. Even though you might be a genuine car lover and aficionado that does not necessarily mean that you are a car mechanic. Engines and that parts that compose it, can be very complicated. Replacing many of these parts can be an issue and a headache; so many times it is important to take the car to a profession to deal with it.

The first thing you should do, before searching on your own for a mechanic is to take a close look at your owners manual. The manual many times will be able to offer you tips and advice on maintance, and give you enough information to make an informed decision. Many times the manual will have numbers of recommended places that will be able to service your car, and it since it is in the manual they should be reliable places.

There are a couple of things that you may want to try first, before taking the car into the shop for repair. If your engine does not turn over it could be due to a dead battery. Check the battery and make sure that it is fully charged. If you turn the ignition key and it does not activate, it probably means that you are getting no voltage to the dash and or to the key switch. This implies that you might have a blown ignition fuse, a dislodged circuit breaker, a loose or damaged harness plug. You may want to unplug it and then put it back in. This might do the trick. Your engine also has a red circuit breaker button, push the button, you have to really push it hard, the breaker can sometimes pop out of the harness if it is overloaded, and doing this can resolve the problem with this part. If this does not work, then unfortunately, you are probably looking at a bigger issue and will need to take the car into the shop for repair.

The reason an individual purchases a mercruiser engine is because of its reliability. They are products that are cheaper and of less quality, but it is always better to use the best in an industry. When these parts need to be repaired it is more important that you get the best people to fix it. The important thing is make sure you find someone who is qualified and licensed to work on your engine.

Repair Or Replace Your Automotive Headliner

Repair Or Replace Your Automotive Headliner
    By Todd Speary

    What can be done?

There have been some temporary headliner solutions offered in the past, such as those wist in pins, but they are at best a temporary solution to repair the problem and will actually damage the headliner board, and cause more problems when it comes time for a more permanent repair.

The best solution to repairing your headliner is to completely replace the fabric of your headliner. You could have that done professionally, although that would be a rather expensive solution. A much more affordable solution would be a do-it-yourself headliner repair kit that make this project something that anyone can do.

At stockinteriors.com we also offer a complete replacement for the entire headliner board, which comes pre-covered with the fabric color of your choice. This option is only avaialble for a very small selection of automobiles.

    What is a Headliner?

Most cars, trucks, vans and SUVs after the mid 70's have what is called a fabric covered headliner board. This headliner board is usually made from a pressed material, much like cardboard. That headliner board is then covered with a foam backed headliner fabric, which is glued directly to the board. In most cases, the sagging or separation occurs when the headliner fabric separates from the foam.

    What should I buy?

When looking for a do-it-yourself headliner repair kit, look for several things. First of all, make sure you are buying a quality material. Most headliner fabric comes with either 1/8 inch thick foam, or 1/4 inch thick foam. It is usually best to go with the 1/4 inch thick foam as it is more durable and will give a better finished look. Make sure that wherever you buy, you can get the exact color that you want; a reliable headliner store will send you samples to match your existing headliner. Keep in mind, that time and sunlight can fade your headliner, so look for a piece that has been protected from the sun when matching colors.

Also, make sure that you order the correct size headliner repair kit. Cars, trucks, van and SUVs all come in different widths and lengths, so you want to make sure you buy enough material to cover the entire headliner board. If in doubt, always buy a little extra, as it is easy to cut it smaller, but impossible to make it larger once you buy it.

And last of all, make sure the headliner repair kit you buy comes with enough glue adhesive. Typically, headliner kits include a spray contact adhesive. Usually one can is enough for a small van/SUV or car, but anything larger will require 2 cans of glue. Make sure the glue is specifically made for headliner fabrics and the high temperatures that can build inside of a vehicle.

How do I replace the Headliner Material?

Without going into too many details, the general idea of a do-it-yourself headliner repair kit, is that you scrape the existing headliner material off your old headliner board and glue on the new material. Most quality headliner kits will come with the detailed instructions on how to do this. The hardest part of the job may be getting the headliner board out of your car; be sure not to damage the board in any way, or you will be in worse shape then when you started. And remember that the smoother you can get the headliner board before you glue the new fabric in place, the better the end result will look.

As you can see, replacing or repairing your headliner material is a job that anyone can do. You just need a little time and patience and you can repair that ugly and dangerous headliner.

Some Important Considerations In Choosing A Quality Body Shop For Your Auto Repair

Some Important Considerations In Choosing A Quality Body Shop For Your Auto Repair
    By Gregg Hall

Although your sports car may take scratches and beatings, accidents sometimes happen. When they happen, the car owner must decide where to take it for body repair. Finding a reliable quality body shop you can trust is a good idea. You always want to make sure that your car will be fixed to the way it looked before the accident.

As with other services, there are either awesome providers or really bad providers. Most providers fall in between those categories. Looking at, the important ness of a sports car to a motor lover, it seems rational to find the best care for your baby.

The first rule is how well the shop is known for its business. Talk to other sports car owners, your mechanic and others to find the shop thats right for your sports car. A really good shop will be known by everyone in town. Someone should stay far away from shops that dont have a good word about them. Dont be drawn to a shop just because of its big sign. So instead seek out other knowledge of experts who know of master body shops.

The second rule is your thinking of there work. Any shop should be happy to show you there current projects or cars they are working on. By looking at their actual work, you will be able to make the decision of if they can get the job done and done right. If you think that their work isnt good enough and looks off, you can imagine what your car would look like if you let them work on it.

The last rule is how firmly a body shop will stand behind what it has done. Bodywork can usually be finished in a way that will last forever, and a great shop should believe in what they can do for you. Ask the shop if they have any guarantees that they may have in case they dont fix your ride to the potential you know can be done. A shop owner who doesnt seem to believe in what they can do is probably a bad choice.

A car is always an investment, and is most always a love. It only makes good sense that a well known repair man will be taking car of your ride during an accident repair. Accidents happen, but there is no reason why you should be able to get the best possible repairs as you can go out and find the shop you need today.

Auto Repair Costs: How You Are RippedOff Daily Under the Radar

Auto Repair Costs: How You Are Ripped-Off Daily Under the Radar
    By Theodore Olson

Most know the most glaring auto repair pricing abuses: Service centers overcharging $100s even $1000s for repairs, or charging for service that was never done at all. To be sure, this still happens every day.

However, there are many other techniques which involve flying just low enough to avoid detection. The savvy repair shops increase the price so as not to set off any alarms. Its become so common that its not just an accepted industry practice, but even service customers have accepted paying higher prices.

Knowing how ingrained price-gouging is within the automotive service industry, its shocking (although understandable) that even service customers have succumbed to excessive car repair prices. I frequently hear service customers state:

Yeah, I know I was ripped off, but my cars fixed now. Or, I know they charge too much, but theyre convenient.

This is insane! To accept auto repair price-gouging is to allow its continuation. The difficult part, of course, is how to stop it. Given that the automotive service industry is so big and powerful (and so frightfully necessary) how does one battle such a force?

The first thing to understand is the degree to which this type of stealth-like price-gouging occurs. A two-decade undercover investigation has revealed that 98% of all repair shops (dealerships, local shops, and franchises) are price-gouging their customers in one form or another.

The following exchange, between a service manager and service advisor, provides an idea of the scope of scamming below the radar.

A service advisor asked his manager how to bill more hours per month, which is another way of asking how the advisor can make more money. The service manager casually stated:

Simply add an additional two tenths to every ticket you write.

In other words, every customer this particular service advisor helps, he was instructed by a superior to add a little extra. So if the labor rate is $100 per hour that would equal $20 extra. Rather than pay $100 per hour, the service customer would actually pay $120.

$20 doesnt sound like much. However, whether its an overcharge of $0.02 or $20, its too much. If you visit a shop practicing just this strategy alone (there are hundreds of strategies, many applied simultaneously), you may get scammed $100's or more by years end.

Whats really shocking is that being ripped-off $100's over a years time is actually minor!

    Try $500-$5000!
